Frostbeaks

A penguin. A mountain with no bottom. An avalanche that never gets tired.

Frostbeaks is a downhill arcade descent. Point your skis at the fall line, thread a corridor of pines, seracs and slalom gates that keeps getting narrower, and keep the wall of snow where it belongs: behind you.

Every metre of the mountain is generated as you fall down it. So is the weather. So is the sky.

Ride

• Carve, tuck, brake. Speed is bought with commitment. Tuck and you go faster and steer worse.
• Get air. Kickers, roller trains and step drops that fall three to six metres across the piste. Spin, flip, hold a grab, land it clean.
• Smash things. Snowmen, slalom gates and fences pay out like tricks and extend your combo window. They are the glue that keeps a chain alive between jumps.
• Find the ice. Glare ice is a genuine fast line. There is no edge to bite, so nothing slows you down, and nothing steers you either.
• Get balled. Clip a snow boulder and you are packed into a rolling snowball with no steering, growing and then shrinking until it spits you out. It is always slower than skiing. That is the joke.
• Collect herring. Obviously.

The mountain

Five bands over 8.4 km: Alpine Forest, Glacier Field, Boulder Gorge, Icefall and Summit Night. Then it loops one notch harder. The corridor squeezes from 30 m down to 13 m as you go, and a pine forest thins into a serac field over 150 m with no boundary anywhere.

Nothing is hand-placed, and nothing is random per run. Replay a seed and you get the same mountain, the same props and the same storm in the same place.

The sky is doing real work

• Volumetric clouds, raymarched every frame, with lit tops, shadowed bases, and shadows crossing the snow that belong to the cloud actually casting them.
• An aurora you can look straight up into, its rays converging overhead the way a real display does. The green spills onto the snow.
• Seven weather states, keyed to metres descended rather than to a clock, so a squall is a place on the mountain you watch coming down the valley, not a timer going off. Survive a whiteout and it almost always breaks into sun.
• Morning, midday, golden hour, aurora twilight, cross-fading through a full day every 6.6 km. Light and weather run on different cycles, so they never march in step.

Weather never touches physics or grip. Two runs of the same seed stay comparable, which means the records screen is measuring you and not the sky.

Dress the bird

Eight slots (hat, eyewear, neck, back, flippers, ride, belly marking and eyes) with 49 items and four palettes, previewed live on the actual penguin under the actual sky. The menu’s accent colours follow whatever you put on it.

Sixteen achievements

Ride 4,000 m in one run. Touch 45 m/s. Land a single trick worth 2,500. Collect 500 herring across a career. The game keeps your records and your personal best between sessions.

Multiplayer: coming soon

Online racing for up to ten penguins on one shared seed, in Sprint and Elimination, is built and is not switched on in this build. The menu row is there so you know it is coming; it arrives in an update.

Running it

Windows x64. Unzip anywhere and run Frostbeaks.exe. No installer, no launcher, no account and no network. It is fully offline. F11 for fullscreen, Esc to pause.

Quality auto-detects from your frame time and keeps scaling as it goes, with Low through Ultra presets if you would rather decide yourself.
